Hi this is Welcome to Self® and I’m your host, Dr Hayley D Quinn, the anti-burnout business coach. I’m a speaker, author, former clinical psychologist and a late identified auDHDer.
Welcome to Self ® is a podcast for business owners like you who want success but not at the cost of your well-being. This is about transforming self and transforming business. I’ll be here to remind you that you’re human first and as well as being a business owner, you have different roles in your life that need your attention and to manage those well, you need to take care of yourself in the best way possible.
Here you’ll learn about practices that’ll help you navigate not just your business but your non-work life as well and you’ll realise that you’re not alone in the ways you struggle. You’ll have your curiosity piqued on various topics as I chat with wonderful guests and bring you solo bite-sized episodes.
I’m here for service-based business owners and entrepreneurs like you, to help you increase your self-care and compassion, change your relationship with yourself and your business, and elevate your business to a new level so you can live the full and meaningful life you desire.
This is a place of nourishment, growth and helpful information. A place where you can learn ways to assist you and your business to thrive.
We’ll talk all things mindset, strategy and well-being and I’m so excited you’re here. If you haven’t already, go and hit subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.
So, let’s get started
Hi and welcome back to another bite sized episode. Today I want to talk about something we all know we need, but often put last: self-care.
Now, before your brain goes, “Yeah yeah, I know I should be doing that,” let me offer a gentle reframe. Self-care is not a reward. It’s not a luxury. It’s not something you earn once your to-do list is complete.
It’s actually a recalibration tool. It’s what allows you to come back to yourself while life is happening.
Too often, especially in the business and helping worlds, and particularly for women, we treat self-care like dessert after dinner. Get all the work done, hit those deadlines, look after everyone else… and then maybe, if there’s time left, you get to do something for yourself. Sound familiar?
But that way of living leads to depletion, resentment, and ultimately burnout.
So what if we saw self-care less like a treat, and more like a necessary tuning in to yourself? Because you, my friend, need that. You don’t need to wait until you’ve got the time to take a holiday or go on a retreat in the mountains. You need to tune in in real time — amid the emails, the kids, the clients, the chaos.
Throughout the day, little things can add up and cause stress. A frustrating email. A missed meal. Overriding your needs again and again. You end up walking through your day, wondering why you’re so tired or uninspired.
But there are little things you can do to help.
Take a minute to do some soothing breaths between meetings.
Drink some water before your next task.
Say no to that thing you don’t have capacity for.
Stand outside for 60 seconds and allow yourself to notice the sky.
It doesn’t have to be bubble baths and candles — unless you love those, of course.
The key is to stop seeing care as a reward for good behaviour, and start seeing it as essential maintenance. Because your nervous system, your creativity, your energy, your relationships, your business… they all depend on you being resourced.
So here’s your gentle invitation: what would self-care look like for you today? Not tomorrow. Not next month. But today.
Maybe it’s closing your laptop 10 minutes earlier. Maybe it’s letting yourself off the hook for not doing “all the things.” Maybe it’s choosing connection over perfection.
You deserve to be well while you build your business and live your life.
Thanks for being here, and thanks for being you. Until next week, take good care of yourself — not because you’ve earned it, but because you need it and you deserve it.
