Hi this is Welcome to Self® and I’m Dr Hayley D Quinn, fellow human, mother, wife, clinical psychologist, supervisor, trainer and coach.
Welcome to Self® is a place where you can come and learn about the practices that assist us as humans, realise that you’re not alone in the ways you struggle, and have your curiosity piqued on various topics as I chat to wonderful guests or bring you solo episodes. This is a place to remember that you are human first and have different roles in your life that need your attention and for that you need to take care of yourself in the best way you can. My aim is that this is a place of nourishment, growth and nurture. A place where you can welcome Your Self.
Hi and welcome to another episode. I’m excited to bring you this bonus episode with an update about the podcast. You may have noticed a slight change to the introduction compared to past episodes. I recently made the decision to change the name of the podcast from Welcome to Self®- Caring for the Human in the Therapist Chair to Welcome to Self® with Dr Hayley D Quinn.
Why have I done this you might ask?
Well one of the reasons is I never thought I’d reach so many wonderful humans and I’ve had people reach out to me who are not therapists but who are enjoying the podcast and finding it really helpful, and I want to make this information more accessible, so changing from focusing on therapists feels important. I was out for lunch with a friend the other day and she had tuned in to my episode on Burnout, if you haven’t listened to it it’s episode 26. My friend is a nurse and she let me know she found the episode really helpful and also said “to be honest Hayley if I didn’t know you, I wouldn’t have listened to that because I don’t consider myself a therapist.” It confirmed for me something I’ve been thinking for a while now, that there are people missing out on tuning in because of the title, so that needs to change.
Another reason the podcast is changing is because I’m changing too. We all grow and evolve in our lives and throughout our work and I’m now in a place where in my own mind I don’t just consider myself a therapist. I have varied roles in my work life: business owner, therapist, supervisor, trainer, mentor, and coach. I realised I’d been attached to working as a therapist or with therapists as I thought this was the way to honour the studying and work I have been doing for the past 20 years! It’s interesting when we tune in and listen to the stories we tell ourselves, we can then recognise the beliefs we hold that may be not so helpful. Beliefs that can interfere with how we want to run our businesses, beliefs that can keep us from living the life we want to be living! Change is inevitable throughout our life and if we allow ourselves to grow with those changes and give ourselves permission to make different decisions, we can flourish, we can live a more authentic life, dare I say we can be happier, I know I am!
I’ve learned a lot about myself over the years and now I recognise and accept myself as the creative entrepreneur that I am. I also recognise my extensive learning, knowledge, and skills that I have acquired over the years, and I realise that I don’t have to stay solely within the mental health field to honour this. I don’t have to only speak to a therapist audience, although I do love working with therapists and helping professionals and don’t worry, this new evolution of the podcast will still resonate for you, as it has always been focused on the fact that we are all human first! But it is time for me to widen the scope of my work so you won’t feel excluded by nature of being something other than a therapist.
We are all human first and I truly believe that when we change the relationship we have with ourselves to one that is more compassionate, nurturing, reflective and kind, we can more easily make decisions that support the life we want to be living. Now I’m not saying making these decisions is simply easy, because I know it’s not, sometimes it’s really hard and in my experience despite it having its challenges, it feels so worth it.
As I considered the evolution of the podcast, it had me thinking about my own evolution and how up until a decade ago I had been a single parent. For 13 years I raised my son alone whilst studying and working hard, sometimes too hard, to create a life with more choice and financial freedom, and as I record this episode I feel so grateful to my younger self for all of her courage, determination, sacrifices and hard work, because now I get to choose, now I get to live the life I design, live life on my terms and one that honours my values of compassion, authenticity, connection and freedom. Back then as I fought to create a different life, I could never have imagined what my life would look like now! All I can say is Dream Big people!!
So, what does all this mean moving forward? Well probably not too much, you may notice that questions aren’t tailored to therapists and helping professionals anymore but more generally to human beings. Having said that I do have two episodes in the bank that will still have some therapist questions, but I wanted to move forward with the name change rather than wait for those to have been released. What can I say, I’ve been excited to share the news and just couldn’t wait!!
Currently episodes are monthly and if I can make it work for me in a sustainable way, then I will increase episode frequency again, but I’ll get back to you on that one. As many of you know, authenticity is a strong value for me, so I don’t want to be talking with you about building sustainable habits whilst running myself ragged in the background, and I’m now managing the back end of the podcast myself until I find someone new to take this over, so I need to be mindful of the amount of work I’m doing.
Thank you as always for tuning in, I hope you’re as excited about this change as I am, and I’d love it if you can let the people in your life know about it too. If you’re interested in ways you can work with me, or want to leave me some feedback, please reach out via my website at www.drhayleydquinn.com, I’d love to hear from you.
