Now let’s get to the episode.
Hi, and welcome back to another bite sized business episode.
I’m excited about this one!!! This is episode 50!! Oh my gosh, it seems like yesterday that this podcast was just an idea.
I can’t believe that we have now had 50 episodes and that really feels like something to celebrate, quite the milestone. Thank you to everyone who has tuned in, I know some of you have been with me since the beginning, that’s wild!! Some of you have joined us along the way and some of you are completely new to the pod, welcome welcome. It’s very humbling to see how many downloads happen each month and I know it might be small in comparison to some the big podcasts out there but that doesn’t matter to me, what matters to me, is I’m providing helpful information to you, the people who choose to listen to Welcome to Selfâ so thank you for being here.
So this brings me to the topic of celebration. I think it’s something that we don’t do enough of.
This can be for many reasons; we all have our own stories from our earlier life of whether achievements were celebrated or just expected. A lot of high achieving people I’ve worked with over the years minimise what they do, and that certainly used to be me too.
There’s lots of factors that can play into why we don’t celebrate ourselves and our achievements. We’ve probably all heard of the terms don’t blow your own trumpet or don’t get too big for your boots. And over here in Australia, we have a concept called tall poppy syndrome. This is where people are criticised for their success. If people think that someone is too successful, or bragging about their achievements, they can end up being quite criticised for this and personally I think that’s really sad.
I think particularly for women, but not only women, we’ve been socialized to stay small, stay quiet and not speak up about our achievements and I really think this needs to change. I want to help people live their lives out loud, find and use their voice, take up space, embrace who they are and live the lives they really want!
I think celebrating our achievements is good on many levels. One, who doesn’t love a celebration (in whatever way you like to celebrate, doesn’t have to be a big loud party, like no thank you!). If there’s an opportunity to eat cake, beautiful vegan cake from maple and sage, preferably for me, I’m gonna take it.
When we can reflect and acknowledge what we’ve done, what we’ve overcome and what we’ve achieved, it can help us as we move forward, as we move towards new goals and face new challenges. It can give us a sense of confidence and competence.
When we reflect on our achievements and allow ourselves to celebrate, it helps us actually slow down and pay attention to what it is we’ve done.
Often times we can relate to working hard towards something, and achieving it, but then quite quickly our thoughts move on to asking what’s the next thing I have to do? and I used to be very much like that, and I speak to many people who say that’s exactly how they operate in the world. Doing this means you don’t get to enjoy what you’ve done, it’s just ticked off and you move on.
Slowing down and reflecting on what we’ve done, can also give us really important information. We can ask ourselves, what was it that helped me overcome that thing? What was it that helped me reach the goal that I had set for myself? What got in the way or made this harder for me? What did I need to draw on within myself? What did I need to reach out for in terms of support? Who were the people that supported me the most?
And then we can ask ourselves, how can I now use this information moving forward? It can give you some clear information when you’re working towards other goals, so can you see what was helpful and perhaps what wasn’t. You can remind yourself that you are capable of achieving things and that you have resources within yourself and outside of yourself that you can draw on.
The other thing I think it does is it helps us change the narrative. If other people see you taking time to celebrate yourself and your achievements, it gives them permission to do the same.
When we share what we’re doing and what we’ve accomplished with people in our lives, they can help us celebrate as well. Now you might want to be selective about who those people are because I know not everyone is going to understand and agree with your dreams and aspirations. And not everybody is going to be happy for you when you achieve the things that you’ve set out to do. But it’s important that we have people around us who are happy to do that.
When we share our accomplishments and our achievements with those people, we can enjoy the celebrations and you never know who you might inspire along the way.
We can feel connected to others and then those people know that when they’re working hard towards their goals, they’re going to have people around them who want to support them and celebrate with them as well.
Having a community of people around you who want to lift you up, who want to encourage you, who believe in you and the goals that you’re setting for yourself and want to celebrate with you along the way is so so valuable.
Have a think now what something is, no matter how small or big, that you would want to celebrate and perhaps who is somebody that you would like to share your achievement with so they can celebrate with you. I certainly don’t think my current life would look the way it does if I didn’t have those people around me.
And if right now you don’t have anybody that comes to mind, flick me a message and I’ll celebrate with you.
Let’s change the narrative about what it means. Let’s debunk the tall poppy syndrome. Let’s help each other rise up and reach the goals and move towards the full and meaningful lives that we desire and deserve.
One of the activities we regularly engage in in our Welcome to Self®: Time to Thrive program is regular reflection and celebration of achievements. Many of the business owners that I work with start off as people who don’t celebrate what they do but this is something that we certainly look at changing within the program, because I really do think it’s so important and can benefit us in so many ways.
If you’d like to join us in a community of like-minded business owners, be surrounded by people who absolutely want to celebrate with you, you’ll find the link to join us in the show notes. This intake closes on the 9th of February so if you’re listening to this podcast after the 9th, there’s also a link in the show notes to join the wait list for when doors open to the program again.
I’d love to see you in there and help you change the relationship you have with yourself and your business so you can both thrive and join you in your celebrations along the way.
In the meantime, go well and go gently with yourself and remember, when you thrive your business can too
